EyeConnect Monthly Platinum Member Spotlight: Dr. Douglas Mazzuca, Sr.
Each month, ASCRS recognizes an EyeConnect Platinum Member for his/her valuable contributions to the EyeConnect forum. Dr. Douglas Mazzuca, Sr., DO, who practices in Pennsville, NJ, is the April recipient based on his engagement points and extensive involvement in the community for the past decade.
“EyeConnect allows you to interact with colleagues across the country and around the world,” he said. “It is a treasure trove of tips, pearls and advice that is pertinent to your practice.”
Born in Philadelphia and raised in southern New Jersey, Dr. Mazzuca was attending the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) when the ophthalmology field first grabbed his attention while studying retinal photographs. “The blend of medicine and surgery with the ability to quickly restore vision really attracted me,” he said. “Optics and ophthalmic instruments had me hooked.”
After graduating and receiving the Wilbur P. Lutz award for proficiency in physical diagnosis, he continued to train at PCOM where he also served as chief resident. He spent his last year of residency at Christiana Care (formerly the Medical Center of Delaware).
As the first ophthalmologist to perform refractive surgery and small incision cataract surgery in Salem County, Dr. Mazzuca has been in private practice for nearly 30 years. When not in the office, his time is devoted to his family that includes his wife of 33 years and five children. His son, Douglas E. Mazzuca, Jr., DO, has joined him in practice as a general ophthalmologist. “It is very exciting for my staff, patients and, of course, his father,” he said.
When he is not traveling, reading or visiting the Jersey shore, Dr. Mazzuca can be found exploring the range of discussions on EyeConnect. “Topics run from the erudite to the routine,” he said. “I like hearing about my colleagues’ experiences with new premium IOLs, surgical tips and the application of new IOL calculation formulas.”
This is just a sampling of what can be found by engaging with Dr. Mazzuca and hundreds of others on EyeConnect. Post comments on real-time discussions involving cataract/refractive, cornea and retina/vitreous issues, as well as the latest technological and equipment advancements.
The EyeConnect Monthly Platinum Member is chosen among the Platinum ribbon achievers, who have surpassed 6,000 engagement points in their EyeConnect “lifetime.” Additionally, recipients are chosen based on their participation in various discussion boards in a given month. The Platinum Member receives acknowledgement on the homepage of the EyeConnect website, a personalized EyeConnect travel mug and a certificate and letter of recognition.
